I too am not an XP pro.  My computer has a crash recovery option, that 
allows me to reboot using an older system setup and config file.

This may be off the mark, but can you reboot in safe mode?  That way you can 
try and fix and copy the config file.

Finally, some XP installation have a copy of the XP  installtion on the 
hardrive, allowing the manufacturer to ship the computer with out XP 
booklets and manuals.  This is try for both my laptop and desktop.
