I think this might also be the desire to dissolve the ego in an 'other'
i.e.: eros/thanatos
to enter a state of eternal non-being by being absorbed into  
something greater
and sometimes this occurs as a destructive or violent process
example: the armageddon/apocalyptic annihilation desired by the neo- 
con/christian right in the US
