aha -- of course -- that was the one thing that made mowing the lawn
bearable when i was a teenager, matching the pitch of the mower with my
voice and then swooping around it, in a strange kind of suburban raga...

and when i worked at a grocery in bar harbor and spent long-hours restocking
the walk-in cooler, again, that hum.  and again, i amused myself for hours
on end by humming microtonal ditties with the machine.
