Yes and no. I think it adds to the finesse of a soundtrack if there is a
familiarity... but then, apropos of your dog star man story, sometimes
the synchronicities are more interesting than intentionally sympathetic
playing. It often provides a juncture/rupture which opens new
perspectives on viewing.
I think that the work of the Clubfoot Orchestra should be mentioned (not
really microsounding, but...), particularly their Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari, as well as the Alloy Orchestra. Both are good at small
ensemble playing and finding new voices for familiar silent films.
And how could I have forgotten Tarkovsky... Stalker demands some kind of
quiet and quirky treatment!
