Constellations

My network music installation, Constellations
(http://www.sensorband.com/atau/constellations) will be exhibited in Paris
at the Webbar (http://www.webbar.fr) from March 17-31.

If you have sounds ready to put online in MP3 format, I would be very happy
if you could take part in this project - the idea is that since it is a net
installation, that the music should come not just from one place, and not
just from one person.

Here are details on making a contribution to the project:
______________________________________________________
To make a contribution to this project, simply place an MP3 file on an web
server of your choice, and email me the URL. The link will become one of
the planets in the Constellations interface. Your name will be added to the
contributors list. Copyrights stay with the respective composers.

Parameters: length 10sec to 2 min.
**Please encode at a low bitrate: 8kbit or 16kbit. **

For a encoder for Macintosh, check here.

Important notes:
Please do not send me the sound itself. The installation goes out over the
net to YOUR server where your sound resides. This "geographical" network
displacement is seen on the interface as separation of the planets and
display of the URL.

Please note that 8kbit or 16kbit are much lower bitrates than normal. So if
you already have files online in this format, they are probably encoded at
a higher bitrate. High bitrate sounds will not work with Constellations, so
please re-encode at 8 or 16kbit. The idea is that we will have a 256kbps
connection to 5ive machines in the gallery. Each machine can stream up to 8
sounds simultaneously. Even at 8kbit, if each machine streams 8 sounds and
all 5 machines are going, this requires a total bandwidth of 8 x 8 x 5 =
320kbps. I don't imagine the system will max out like this, but if you send
me a link to a high bitrate sound, it will steal bandwidth from other
people's sounds, so will be a bit out of place in this spirit of sharing.
Also, I think the 8 and 16kbit sounds will have a very nice grainy sound
quality - rather than to be disappointed by the way this "low" quality
"distorts" your sounds, I would prefer to investigate the kind of
interesting character this kind of encoding can bring out in a sound.

If you know of others who could be interested in participating, please pass
this along.

The opening of the exposition is on March 17, so it would be good to have
the URL's the day before for final testing. If you are in the Paris area,
please come to the opening.

Thanks, and looking forward to your contributions.
