To give two examples of software oft discussed here, I just bought Reaktor for about $350, and I recall a similar price for Max/MSP. And a cheap computer will not be to happy to run these things, especially without an audio interface. Yes this music may be done on the cheap, but even for shareware one needs a connection to the internet. My point is NOT that we need to be rich in order to make or hear or follow this music, but merely that the context in which these occur is one presupposing of internet connections, multimedia computers, and funds to support both and that THIS context is a bourgeois one. Perhaps in a decade or two we will see the next generation of "Powerbook Jockeys" take the form of Golden Gate Park hippies and tube stop buskers, but those decades will be long ones I think...
