Re: [microsound] series packaging
exactly, it's just you. as long as that is the artists' intent--then fine.
my
concern is that the artist may have an intent for the cover which
suits/relates to the audio. what happens when the artist connects the
cover/packaging with the audio? then will a a label DICTATE a packaging
that
suits itself and not the artist????
as long as it is the artist's intent, then that is is fine and it can be
judged as such. my question is: is that expression being comprimised?
(e.g.
the art is compromised the moment it leaves the artists' hands. especially
in the case of a recording artist, by nature of the medium recorded music is
intended for. these are not multiples. they're product manufactured for mass
consumption. dig?
the analogy is a director who's film is marketed; she has little control
over what sort of artwork goes on the marquee. "artists" in the music
industry is almost a misnomer. the role is probably more of the nature of
entertainer. obviously you're assigning a different value to the work in
this genre than you might to tony bennet, but performing artist is not quite
the same as fine artist. the work is reproduced by high speed manufacturing
and is a product for the consumer to place a value on and make that decision
based upon superficial information, like the cover.
the blue note album covers were different but had an identifiable style, the
obscure covers were the same photo with a different part of the photograph
being "unobscured" (by black ink) for each successive release.
in some instances, for a small press record release especially, the
packaging is part and parcel with the concept of the music or sound
recording, as is the case in a "needle" project i'm working on for beta
bodega. photographs were the impetus for the entire project.
however, for the most part, this is not fine art. the release of music is a
commercial endeavor, if it isn't, you're more likely to find it released in
the fashion of a multiple, small-run, handmade objects (which, is sometimes
a ploy, in itself, that is a marketing decision--- zoviet france might not
have been as successful, initially, if they hadn't decided to make their
covers by hand).
