toop is one of the most informed, respectful, and entertaining
historiographers of experimental music i've read. ocean of sound is an
impressive riffing upon the diverse and interlocking threads combining in
various different neighborhoods of "atmospheric" music over the last 100
years. what i like particularly about his approach is that he deals less
with "genres" or "categories" than with affinities of concept and approach.
a look through the index reveals the breadth of his discussion -- satie,
aphex twin, king tubby, ltj bukem, stravinsky, joe meek, pete namlook,
ethnographic sound recordists, yellow magic orchestra, the velvet
underground, miles davis, brian wilson, sun ra, etc. toop spins
fantastically entertaining and insightful webs out of these artists' lives
and works. highly recommended.

Hello: Mark Laliberte here... I don't talk much on this list, but I
certainly listen. I am a visual artist who works with sound, and sometimes
I am asked to curate sound-related shows in a gallery context. In 1998, I
put together a show called 'Detachable Music For A Collapsible Culture' for
a gallery in Detroit, USA and when they asked me who I wanted to hook up
with to write an essay / introduction for an accompanying catalogue, I
immediately thought of David Toop because of his wonderful book 'Oceans Of
Sound'. It is a fascinating read, and David's knowledge of musical history
is vast. David wrote an excellent forward to the project.
If any of you are interested in reading his intro to the catalogue I speak
of, it is online at the following URL (I believe it's essay #1 on the
page):

Also, if anyone wants to get a copy of the actual publication, contact me
privately... I have a few copies of this very limited run booklet still
available for sale or trade.
