I recall that Francisco Lopez has an early cassette release built entirely 
out of layered tape hiss, although the title escapes me.  And one of the 
pieces on Darrin Verhagen's excellent "Soft Ash" is, if memory serves, 
based on the hiss from Indian pop music cassettes.
