RE: [microsound] francisco lopez
I personnally own seven Lopez records - and honestly, until I saw him live,
I think I had not understood his music at all! Please listen to La Selva (on
V2 Archief) which is by far is most accessible work (plus it contains a huge
booklet on his way of composing and artistical take on music)... Both
acoustically, conceptually, scientificallly (!- Lopez is before anything
else a scholar in Biology) and structurally, it is an amazing piece of
musique concrète...
ALso, his Belle Confusion 999 (Trente Oiseaux) is really beautiful and more
representative of his really minimal work (and not as boring and provocative
than his untitled 74 on T.o.t.e.or as Warzsawa REstaurant). Anyway-------O.

Having had the privilege to see Francisco Lopez perform live in Barcelona
last week, in one of the most sublime performances I've ever seen, I'm now
compelled to seek out some of his material. My question is a fairly obvious
one: what to get?
I'd avoided his recordings, actually, understanding them all to be virtually
inaudible. A lovely concept, I thought, but I already have a few discs of
RLW that do the same thing; did I need more?
His live performance, however, was much, much more (a slow, steady
intensification from tape-hiss to airplane-engine-roar), and so I'm ready to
check out the recorded work. Any recommendations? The only thing I
currently own is his field recordings of the rainforest.
On a similar note, I just last night picked up Reynols' "Blank Tapes" on
Trente Oiseaux last night (made entirely from the hiss of blank tapes), and
on first listen, with volume up and windows closed against street noise, it
was actually very intriguing.
