you know, i actually put very little stock in those reviews - i think they
tend to be more interested in their own cleverness (and distinctive style -
i swear, those things have a music all their own) than in really getting at
the meat of the record.  

a better model might be aquarius records' (SF) new-release mailout - they're
not afraid to slag something they deem truly mediocre, even if it's being
touted everywhere else as the most brilliant thing in the world.  (of
course, i don't always agree with them; but i appreciate their honesty, even
when they risk selling fewer records.)
