Re: [microsound] On the subject of coil...
also for coil:
music to play in the dark--just give the vocals a chance...even if you hate
them at first, they will eventually show themselves as brilliant.
and absolutely essential is the eskaton 003,. trk titles: 1. Philm
2. static electrician
3. red scratch
....the third track of which i can safely say within my own opinion is the
epitome of their work and completely OWNS. it puts most of the current
"glitch" material that is spewing forth now completely in the dust...and it
sounds to be made mostly with old analogue synths. it's structure is the
most organic and sarcastic i have heard. such delicate blend of sincerity
and humour is almost impossible to find in any medium by any other artist
right now.
coil are consistenly showing us, as of late, that most of the newest
technology is simply being used as a crutch by most artists. they are able
to reach within a lot of the old familiar sounds and pull out the essences,
the barest skeletons of the soul in those seemingly tired sounds and put them
forth in ways that move you on levels that you weren't aware you could be
moved. how ironic that music made by guys at such an advanced age, and music
that uses such seemingly arcane imagery and ideologies, is also the music
that i believe to be some of the most humanly evolved music that is recorded
right now. i think that our whole "hypermodern" aesthetic is getting it's
ass kicked by them and that a lot of the current "glitch" artists should stop
writing code for a few weeks, drop some acid, and lock themselves away with
as much coil as they can find. they are definitely our fathers, our
forefathers, and the under-appreciated shamans of our small, arrogant tribe.
worship the glitch, indeed.
also, it would be difficult for me to overstate the spiritual, emotional, and
otherwise unexplainable impact that the eskaton 14 has had on me this past
summer... the ep is dedicated to and recorded during the summer solstice, and
the sounds and lyrics have opened up modes of awareness within me that have
created new dimensions to my ideas and perceptions of my own existence. the
fact that it is time-specific, that it is based on the location of our planet
and it's effect on our individual interiors, is felt and not thought. my
skepticism of occult sciences and astrology have been exposed as ignorance
and arrogance. the album changed me, which is the last thing i was thinking
music capable of doing anymore. yeah, it's that
fuckin' good, yo. i'm still a kid, basically. i like jungle, and i was
almost afraid of the depth of this recording, because now it seems my
listening has reached a plateau. no one else is gonna be able to do it for me
like they have anytime soon, i'm afraid.
i say, enough self-serving ideology and fetishistic
techno-worship, and more instinct and essential nature.
the sun is coming.
