a few records of note...

albums of note, picked up recently...

ensemble "sketch proposals" (rephlex) is actually microsonic pop, & a
fairly interesting attempt at it too, even though it's, well, sketchy.
barely 30 minutes ($1 a minute at rephlex rates, duh). the
oval/glitch/skipping reference is definitely present, but in more of a
bass-heavy, droney kind of way. nice vocals, reminescent of laetitia
sadier or the pram singer whose name eludes me at the moment. what i
really like about the album is, in fact, its utter vagueness; especially
tracks 1 & 3. no straight melodic lines, just a big jumble of sound. i
like it more than i should, i suppose...

tetsu inoue "fragment dots" (tzadik) ~ here's another one on the oval
tip, though this one is more jumpy. the structures are always complex
even though the sound palette seemed pretty consistent throughout. it
doesn't just repeat for a while to lull you in; it's actually
unsettling. that said, it's not a hard listen either; pretty much the
contrary. haven't checked it out throughly enough to say more about the
music per se, but this definitely bridges a gap between hypercerebral
clickmusic & a somewhat more gut-oriented approach; most likely this
will only make it all the more esoteric to all the orthodox listeners of
clicks & cuts.

also picked up presocratics "works and days" (table of the elements):
lo-fi electroacoustics, pretty dense, informed by american minimalism &
some kind of left-wing/democratic sentiment. there are vocals in
certain pieces, though certainly no "hymns"! check out if you're into
tony conrad; i shall say more soon. &: hallucinator "landlocked" (chain
reaction), more techno than microsound but what the hell. sometimes
feels half-finished but its sheer diversity (what a concept!) &
all-around warmth makes for an appealing album throughout. if you like
older deupree ("comma")...
