Random Industries: selected random works RIT015

Random Industries is a project of Sebastian Meissner, ex-Autopoieses, which is mainly concerned with the random event in post-digital composition. Random Industries also want to combine analogue aesthetics with digital ones, and to look for interfaces between both. The analogue working process is reminiscent of the works of the early electronic music pioneers such as Steve Reich, Jean-Claude Risset, James Tenney and Max Mathews, but also of the film soundtracks of the late seventies. The digital process continues the work of non-sequential music which originates in the earlier works of Autopoieses.

Structurally, Random Industries' Selected Random Works operates on two levels: first, 99 digital tones make up the actual tracks on the CD. These can be played in the random/shuffle mode of the CD-player. This creates either an eight-minute composition when played in the single mode, or an endless composition when played in the continuous mode. Each rendition produces a new random structure. On another level the spaces inbetween those 99 digital tracks - which typically last three seconds and serve as intermissions - play a role. Here the spaces contain the opposite 98 compositions. Those can only be heard if the random/shuffle mode is deactivated.

The acoustic micro-structure of the 99 compositions at five seconds each are digital tones created by the deliberate misuse of computer software, which makes the hard disk become a digital tone generator.

Random Industries also works as a live-project: the idea is to mix various CD-players in the random/shuffle mode, combining it with laptop live-work. This form opens up a dense composition whose individual levels perpetually redefine themselves, creating complex structures with multiple sound patterns.
