Tomy - Drum Gizmo
Dear All,
Not sure if any of you have seen this little marvel but I just stole one
(with his mum's eager permission) from a four year old at a kids' birthday
party I was at this afternoon.
In a nutshell it's a handheld kids' drum machine - bright yellow and red.
Very simple (but then, simple always tends to be the best). There's a basic
loop that plays when you hit a button marked 'music' - nothing too special,
BUT...
There's a fantastic little 'warp' dial which shifts the pitch (much like the
pitch bend dial on a synthesiser). Playing with this elicits all sorts of
weird and wonderful sounds. As if that wasn't enough...
There are seven 'docks' (which have brightly coloured plug-ins) that when
pressed produce a variety of sounds from simplistic 'plink plonk' noises to
Old Skool beat'z' to Autechre'esque stutters. Each of these in turn can be
pitch bent, the result of which is a low-cost, hand-held device that can be
coaxed to produce all manner of weird and wonderful sounds.
For the musician bent on travelling light or just looking for some (fun)
inspiration, this little gizmo is P E R F E C T.
As soon as I heard it I wondered about putting together a compilation on
Fallt which uses only sounds extracted from it - by whatever means - then
looped, played live, whatever. If anyone is interested or wants more
details, contact me, off list. This could be fun.
Take care,
Christopher
