sorry to be a pedant but Menander is actually in Latin (I had to study it
briefly).

You're right, I slipped up there. It's been awhile since I read it. But it should have been obvious to me that Italian drama of the period could only be in Latin.



But yeah, i know what you mean. I was pretty much on my own when I wanted to
write my honors thesis on how Aristophanes makes his plays funny.

It would be equally interesting to explore how so many of the earlier English translations of Aristophanes managed to elide most of the humor and baudiness.




Aristotles' Poetics has some interest re aesthetics. It's rather simply set out and everything's modular so that it can be taken apart, exposed and reassembled. The only problem is that some familiarity with Greek poetry is presumed.


It's a classic. Aristotle's atomism was his strength as well as his weakness. It's a fine book for teaching western concepts because of that brilliant point about how dramatical works are composed of a beginning, middle and end.
