imac, therefore i am [tech. ?], plus F. Bayle



BEGINNER'S TECHNICAL QUESTION, PRIVATE ANSWERS
REQUESTED.

1. I hate to be such a flaming newbie about all this,
but I recently have had the opportunity to buy a
pretty stock 1999 Imac G3 (333Mhz, 32M/RAM, 6G HD) for
dirt cheap; I'm moving toward moving things like MAX,
Supercollider, CSOUND, etc., but I'm wondering if this
particular model is a waste of time WITH DIGITAL
SYNTHESIS IN MIND.  The question only arises because a
laptop or faster desktop Mac is out of the question,
too expensive right now.  Of course I'd upgrade, but
more likely after I'd supe'd up said Imac.  Is it
worth the time to get this computer?  Please only
respond to list if you really think it's germane. 

2. Now listening to Francois Bayle's L'EXPERIENCE
ACOUSTIQUE (1970-2).  I find this stuff pretty
remarkable, if choppy and sometimes kind of episodic
in way that I (beginner) identify with musique
concrete.  How does this record compare to Bayle's
other work, most notably the "continuation" (?) of the
EXPERIENCE project in the Eighties, release by INA-GRM
as the double-disc SON-VITESSE LUMIERE (?).  I was a
little disappointed by LA MAIN VIDE, a newer piecefrom
1994-5, which somehow seemed more, er, slick, perhaps
more academic; nonetheless, some beautiful lushness.
 
------s, old school (but digging the hell out of the
Rosy Parlane + Fennesz e.p.....it's way too short, I
want to soak in it a bit longer.
