I still can't afford a "real" computer and I have been using a PPC
7200/120MHz to do synthesis for the past 4 or so years. Obviously any
complex real-time stuff is out of question but I have used it
*successfully* for both "tape" music and live shows. Your iMac is
plenty for starters. By the time you learn to use the tools you'll
probably have enough cash to get a dual processor G4 (or G5 by that
time, possibly) to do some funky stuff.
