[no type] 3 new releases, a brand new design & 2 years of free music!

** SPAM! **

november 21, 2000 -- with a little lag (so as to not make a precedent),
the NO TYPE online label <http://www.notype.com> is celebrating 2 years
of offering the most singular music available online in an otherwise
pluralist context. coinciding with the event is the launch of a whole
new web site design & new releases from MATRIX ASSIMILATION, JAMES
SCHIDLOWSKY & SINE FICTION.

& guess what? you're all invited!

YEAR02 REPORT >>

over the past year, no type has continued its mission to present the
world with the boldest of the brave, with additions to its roster
covering everything from delirious fabricated post-pop (EFFECT, SKOOP,
3CODE) to the most thrilling unbeaten paths of electronic music (EUCCI,
ANDREW HAYLECK, THEMOONSTEALINGPROJECT, PHILÉMON, SPEECH.FAKE), if not
sitting onto completely alien grounds (L'ÎLE DE BÉTON).

no type veterans have also been fairly active. after completing his
much lauded _variants_ project, TOMAS JIRKU went on to release the most
succesful tracks on a cd (available on the alien8 label) which won him
critical praise. he also released a split single with 833-45 & a
mini-album under the moniker THE VICEROY, both of which are still
available on no type. the rest is history being written... his new
album _sequins_ (cd & double vinyl) is set to appear on german
über-label force inc. in the next weeks, if not days.

moreover on the extracurricular front, a 7" of shortwave-based music is
on the burner for 833-45 (forthcoming on the kultbox label). also
imminent is the launch of a compilation from co-records, ran by
DIABLATOMICA [estevan carlos].

rounding up the year were releases from MATRIX ASSIMILATION, PERIOD
THREE & ANAESTHESIA.

despite trying to maintain the lowest profile imaginable, the last year
has seen three verbose (& enthusiastic) articles on no type, first from
ios smolders of vital weekly <http://www.earlabs.org>, then from rob
geary of grooves magazine <http://www.groovesmag.com> & the other from
jeremy keens of ampersand etc.
<http://ampersand.virtualave.net/ampersand.html> there has also been a
televised feature on no type on télé-québec, write-ups in three montréal
papers, & i have also had the odd honor to represent no type in a
conference at the 1999 rencontres de l'adisq (they didn't invite me for
2000.)

mp3 may have gone past "revolutionary" status & to the hands of people
with large sums of money at hand, its convenience & widespread
acceptance from everyone involved with the internet has produced a real
change in music distribution in the past 2 years. as the (probably)
first online label in canada, opening on october 1st 1998, no type has
maintained a low profile amidst the media crap & dodgy opportunities.

now that mp3.com & napster are running closer to losing any sort of
credibility on the topic of "artists rights" or more generally "fair
game", sites like ours may be the ones who must maintain the argument
for, if we may put it this way, a fairer game.

already the "no profit" implication, if it doesn't contribute to putting
actual money in anyone's pockets, has so far managed to allow for a
burst of creative freedom, a stimulating possibility for both
adventurous musicians & discerning music lovers. the absence of
financing may make things happen slower, if not in quite clunkily a
fashion, but it also makes us truly independent, in a sense now too
often merely shrugged at.

YEAR03 BEGIN >>

& now, debuting its third year of existence, no type continues to move
forward with its critically acclaimed selection of today's most
interesting oddball (& unfortunately so far unknown) music.

debuting the onslaught is JAMES SCHIDLOWSKY, a montréal resident who has
been shaping & capturing drones with surgical precision & umbilical
passion on the course of 5 self-released albums & a slew of live
performances in various galleries & hip spaces such as the casa del
popolo. the 5 tracks he presents on his debut no type release
_previous>>next_ [032] are complete reworkings from older material.
guitars & other noises navigating through many, many effect pedals. &
you can bet it sounds amazing.

eryk salvaggio aka MATRIX ASSIMILATION has made 3 singles for no type so
far, all of which showcase a particular aspect of his hyperactive
mindframe. his fourth offering is called _acid vaudeville_ [033] & it is
a complex, mind-boggling musical tale of ancient 78rpm samples set to an
insistently caustic breakbeat rhythm ~ certainly eryk's most
accomplished work so far. make sure to pump up the volume & by all
means enjoy.
<http://www.notype.com/drones/singles/033/>

SINE FICTION is a project started by aimé dontigny [NAPALM JAZZ] & it is
based around the characters of a given science-fiction novel. the first
installment of this project takes its inspiration from russian writer
yevgeny zamyatin's classic novel _we_ [034], a novel from the beginning
of the century which was the inspiration behind huxley's _brave new
world_ & orwell's _1984_. but the music? bubbly & bleepy, evocative
rhythmic electronic music very unlike anything i've heard before.

that's of course just the beginning. on our next update (which should
happen in 2 uh, "real" weeks), you may expect three additional
excursions into the most exciting little known aspects of music's no
man's land. debuting on no type will be a 5-track ep of scratchy
anti-tones from VIRATONE BALLAD, entitled _sideworm_ [035]; & in a not
entirely sonically unrelated vein, a new episode of EUCCI, _pershing
square_ [036], will be made available for your enjoyment. & not least
the next update shall see the most welcome
return of longtime member OEUF KORRECKT with _shibuya without end_ [037]
so that
the old school meets the new school & make friends.

no type: we are pacifiers. don't you feel pacified?
