Re: [microsound] Luc Ferrari

igy2k,

Does anyone have any info about Ferrari's specific methods and sound
sources, or any anecdotal info about this piece in particular?

His concrete works of the late 50s are still dealing with his idea of the sound object
(something he actually started working with while still using serialist techniques).
the idea of discrete sonic components that are layered, juxtaposed and permutated
to create new and evolving timbres/forms with a high level of self similarity.
Though that little description doesn't really do it justice.
I agree with you that his work at this time was rather amazing.
Though this idea resonates with a lot of the work that was happening
at the GRM (a group with whom he was involved), I know that he developed his sound
object ideas seperately from Schaeffer.

Does anyone know of any good books that deal with this important moment in
music history? There seems to be a real dearth of written info out there
about this stuff....sure, I've visited all the Ferrari/concrete/grm sites,
but I'd like more info.

You might enjoy reading Pierre Schaeffer's "Topology of the Sound
Object." it is relevant.
for a general overview of this era: Paul Griffths' "Modern Music : the avant garde
since 1945" is well worth reading. Also, I've always liked "New Directions in Music" by David Cope. Sadly, neither mention Ferrari's work so these might not be what you are after.

i hope this helps

-Bobby.
