Re: [microsound] microsound/music future
i think what has been said is interesting. of course nothing that is a
product of art is eternal, whether that be paintings, language, or music. of
course that might be for some, difficult to believe, especially with the
increasing number of computer musicians in the US and Europe. the societal
trend is to have no real strong opinion of music so therefore maybe none
will be created. this is shown in our government, too. it is parallel cross
culturally in the broad sense, that people have no real strong opinions.
whereas this wasn't the case 100, 50, or 30 years ago. people like what is
repetitious -- the same of two beats ten times over. the same brand of
thinking can apply to popular music like britney spears; she might not be
liked but she and other /artists/ of all genres are producing what is quick
and easy and likely to numb an ear. is this the fault of the artist? or the
fault of the public. it's the fault of the public.
.. . . people have the growing means and encouragement of popularity to use
tools to produce (that being the computer) but the trouble in the near
future might be that people are using the tool because they are passionate
about the computer itself not the music behind it. who designs string
quartets anymore? it is not even necessary to understand or know math to
produce music. this is why there aren't and maybe will not be unique
compositions such as those from stravinsky and bach in the now or in the
future... it is rare to hear music original and inspired by the composer's
mind, rather than the output of a tool mastered or self taught. this is not
at all to say technology or the micro sound evolution is 'bad', but since
the subject of history has been referenced a few times in this post i will
also add -- the greeks were masters of art and music and theatre -- read
about them and it can be seen why it was all lost (or not continued, rather)
.. . . ashley.

the music industry's days are numbered but so is the integrity of
intellectual property rights and that is something that will affect us ALL.
any musician can put out music from his/her home and as the technology
improves will also be able to distribute hi/fi sounding songs/pieces from
their home
