One good way is to volunteer at a studio. You'll have to do the usual
sweeping, coffee, run errands. But you will be in a environment
where they are actually doing stuff in the real world. You will save
a lot of money and a lot of time. School's are ok for establishing a
good base for engineering theory, most of which nowadays people
can get by without knowing or understanding these bases (which
is really sad IMHO). The costs of the schools can really be quite
high. You'd be better off buying your own gear and setting it
up at home and using it when you've got free time from working
at the studio.
One piece of advice: Make sure that you absolutely love recording
engineering and sound. There will be many sacrifices that you
will have to make along the way. Time, family, friends, loved ones,
health, spirituality, sanity will all be tested over your career. There
is no glamour, fame or huge paychecks (well there can be, just
don't expect them). The main reason that you do it is because
you love it.
Sound for me still gives me a thrill, so deep inside of me, way beyond
anything I have ever experienced. Since spirituality is being tossed
around lately. I feel through sound I somehow am able to connect
with my true innerself and am able to find the harmony within. It is
something that no one else can share or feel. You can not acurately
describe it to anyone. It is just with you. Over my lifetime of enjoying
sound, I have found many different paths and avenues to learn,
explore and experience about sound. Reflecting on the last year
I have been quite excited about the new channels of sound I have
found and greatly look forward to travelling down those roads.
These paths are my Mt.Everest, my Mission to Mars, my Jaques
Cousteau's...etc....I look forward to sharing my experiences along
these paths with you and hearing about my fellow sound travellers
adventures.
All the best this season and in the new year.
Great love in your sound travels
