my nextdoor neighbor has been working with fractals to generate music
(among other techniques). snd:

presumably you have checked out scott draves' work, http://draves.org
i have seen plenty of math-based max/msp projects come and go over the
years, since it is so easy to sketch out a whacky concept, and abandon it
if it looks like a dead end. i have done quite a few myself, but they have
rarely had any real presence in my music.
i am generally wary of artwork that uses its theoretical basis as a means
to attract attention - but i guess it gives you something to talk about.
more often, i think, composers will just integrate these elements into some
larger musical construct and hence you never hear about it.
did you get the genetic algorithm objects working? when i got around to it
i realized very quickly that it would be much easier to build new objects
tailored for a particular situation. the basic math to run a g.a. is quite
simple, and d.i.y. you don't stuck by some lacking feature or design
element.
sounds like a fun article...
