RE: [microsound] Performing "Live"
I promised myself I wouldn't engage in this tired old debate...

If you have problem with the word "performing", I won't be offended if you
call it "mixing". Either way, the important thing is the end result. i.e.
doing something that is interesting to listen to.
perhaps we need to invent a new word for a group of people or single person
"mixing" sounds on the fly without complete knowledge of the end result. and
perhaps another word for when this person or people simultaneously "mix"
sounds on the fly without knowledge of the end result while other person(s)
improvise on "real" instruments. And what do we call it when the person(s)
playing the "real" instruments interact with sound(s) coming from the
person(s) "mixing" at the same time and vice versa? can a guitar player
improvise with a laptoper, but not the other way around?....ugh.
sarcasm aside, I'd be more interested in hearing how people who do use
computers to mix sounds on the fly go about it. in an earlier post, someone
mentioned using Reaktor with a Doepfer pocket control. I use a similar set
up and though I feel it has greatly improved my ability to express myself,
it still has it's short comings. Too many times have I been in the situation
where I had a sound that I felt would go perfectly with the mix, but
couldn't get there in time. Or has anyone ever tried to do a decent
crossfade with the windows mixer? by cleverly combining the tab, shift+tab,
up arrow, and down arrow keys, you can pull it off, but it doesn't feel as
expressive as grabbing a few faders and sliding. anyone know how to control
the windows mixer with MIDI? Could one write a program to do this?
ask yourself one question.
"does it sound good?"
