Re: [microsound] new motion reviews

I also subscribe to the IDM list, and this message was posted there also. It would make sense that motion only sends out one message to multiple lists rather than make a new one every single time. Also, not everyone on this list listens exclusively to microsound or neoclassical.... so at least I personally don't mind when there is mention of Scanner or Tortoise, as "mainstream" as artists like them might seem. (Scanner incidentally cofounded the Ash International label, one of the first highly "microsound" labels i can think of...)

As for editorial content on motion, it would probably be more effective to write them rather than this list..... or you could always write reviews for them yourself.

not to sound like an asshole (why should i worry, i do anyway) but
there's barely two reviews from the list you posted which would somewhat
qualify as "microsound" (namely matmos & the ~scape compilation, which
are among the tamest things one can find under that umbrella). is that
accidental or is that the kind of "aesthetic issues" dan hill was
reffering to when he posted on this list about leaving motion?

perhaps you should think about simple matters of relevance versus
bandwidth before you post a list of reviews on a specialized mailing
list such as this one.

i sort of like motion but the editorial line is running a steep downhill
curve these days, covering less & less ground each passing month &
losing anything remotely resembling a distinct personality. (even the
ECM reviews have gone!) at least you still have some good writers, but
they either write about popular music (matmos) or genres i don't care
much about (ethno-fusio-dubbo-jazzy-o-poopo). then again, i used to
like the variety of motion, the fact that i wouldn't like everything i'd
find there. nowadays the variety has gone down & i don't find anything
to like.

or perhaps the true question is: where's gil gershman when you need him?
