only if the world were really that simple: black and white:
us vs. them.

capitalism and communism have their faults; as does democracy,
monarchy, and every other archy and ism that exists. the fault lies
not w/ the system, but rather who makes the system: human
beings. no system will EVER work perfectly or ever close to
smooth as long as our primary motivation
(collectively and individually)  remains self-centeredness;
as we run around the earth thinking constantly of only our well-being
or our family's and ignoring the rest of the earth. this mindset explains
everything from over-logging of forests ("my family wont be able to
eat if i cant cut down them thar trees!") to the israeli-palestinian
conflict. can you blame the logger? would you do differently?

blaming a ill-defined system such as capitalism or communism
or gov't sponsored terrorist acts carried out in the name
of democracy seems about as productive as
blaming the logger for continuing to log; he's part of much more
fundamental, deep-seated, and serious problem.

in the LA democractic party protests i witnessed how 'peaceful'
the crowd was. i was marching with thousands of others downtown
and to tell you the truth, i was disgusted. not at the police, but rather
SOME of the protesters who were taunting the police. those police
are our uncles and sisters... as if they really wanted to be there
standing
in full riot gear in 100F heat (sorry, im a dumb american, dont know the
celcius on that one!) running around the city, many of them close to heat
exhaustion (literally) while a bunch of spiteful, spoiled youth taunt
them
with every insult you can imagine, full knowing that the police cannot
do anything legally.

of course this does not legitmize the police brutality, whcih im well
aware
of its disturbing prevalence. it's simply a call to a different
perspective.

and this is coming from a noam chomsky, howard zinn, z magazine, and the
nation reading anti-corporate fool.
