[microsound] Eric for Mutek, visuals ?

having attended the bulk of the
>festival (missing the Matmos night) I really felt that the merging of
>audio+visual work was a bit lacking. Budgetary concerns aside, the venue
>(SAT) was equipped with screens and they had the gear to project onto these
>screens, but it just wasn't played up. It wasn't curated to include people
>who are working from the perspective of merging video with sound, the bulk
>of the
>imagery hitting the screens was just an interpliced, angular shot of the
>stage setup/performer and the mixing desk.

As a guset curator at Mutek 2001, I would be really pleased to get any
infos on good live audio-viuals sets. This would certainly help to
emphasize the visuals potential we can set-up.

BUT

May I tell you that in my own experience and through travels I did for both
Mutek and FCMM, the lack of good multimedia events is quite a shame for the
so called multimedia industries and culture. Not to express there is none,
the FCMM intends to presents quality pieces of that kind. Also, Mutek with
more budget would be pleased to present audio installations. But good
pieces are not so numerous as we could expect with the achievement of new
hardware and software.

Mutek does exist becoz' the Media Lounge section of the film festival FCMM
deals with so many compromissions regarding the needs to present images in
a musical and evenemential context. For Alain Mongeau, director of Media
Lounge and Mutek, and program helpers, Mutek was a need to get rid of
these compromissions, focussing essentially on new aesthetics of different
kinds in todays musics. The video set-up at SAT, second set-up, was hanged
up to facilitate any visuals needs musicians would have, but was not
intended to be THE interest of these 3 last nights.

On the other hand, thesecond nightintended, with the audio-visuals
facilities of EX-Centris, to present full audio-visuals works. Matmos,
Rechenzentrum and Ælab do all work with both and presented really strong
multimedia works.

Thanks...

"I deeply enjoyed the AE sparks release. I like the crisp sound of the
whole record, slightly reminiscent of Iceland's stiluppsteypa - reminiscent
in a good way: very few succeed in precise beauty, though many try. ... -
it is music. Diverse and yet continuous..."

"Sparks has a rich intensity with its thick electrical drones. the
listener can really get lost in this piece and seeing the film only adds to
the experience even more. a favourite recording of mine which still grows
in beauty after repeated listening"
