Re: [microsound] I-book, Powerbook or G4 Cube

if you are using it strictly for audio purposes i would go with the iBook but would recommend a good external soundcard to take the strain off of your motherboard card. laptops never have very good sound cards in my experience.....

if you are planning on using the machine for more (like I do), then my opinion is to get the fastest, best machine you can because they are getting obsolete faster and faster. i got a titanium powerbook because i need to have decent video capabilities, and i also need to run several design/authoring tools at the same time..... plus the screen on the iBook is very small if you use applications with a lot of floating palettes and/or "chrome."

the cube i would not recommend...... despite its preciousness, it's not really small enough to be considered portable in my opinion.... give yourself the ease of transport with the powerbook or iBook.

Obviously the iBook is way way cheaper so that might be your best buy. Also, NEVER buy RAM from apple. it's absurdly expensive. get a lower amount of RAM from them and buy from another vendor using pricewatch.com or ramseeker.com ..... i got 256MB on a g4 chip for something around $65. also, you can get an external CDRW with firewire capabilities for a reasonable price, and you're likely to get faster speeds than the standard internal apple tower CDRW drives.

good luck, have fun
