I'm looking for a soundcard that is stereo in and stereo out and sounds
great. That's it. I've got an SBlive with all it's problems. I'd like
something that sounds perfect and I don't need a lot of ins and outs.
M Audio (Midiman) Delta Series is my choice: up to 24-bit and 96KHz (DVD
quality) audio I/O by analog and digital means. I have the Delta 66, with
4 channels analog I/O (1/4" phono jacks on a breakout box) and stereo
digital I/O (S/PDIF RCA jacks on the PCI card). The sound is brilliant,
the noise is absent, and the price (I paid a bit over US$300) is
amazing. There are other models with more or fewer I/O options. I have
been using this one for over a year on my Mac, and even with beta drivers
(version 1 for Mac came out only in December) it has been splendid, while
Windows development is further ahead and should give things even smoother
performance. Yes, there are a few issues when switching between Sound
Manager and ASIO on the Mac, but these are easily fixed. I use mine for
everything from recording and mastering (with Reaktor and Logic) to MP3 and
DVD playback, and I continue to be quite pleased. On the Logic List I know
many are also fond of RME's cards, and several musicians I know are quite
pleased with their MOTU interfaces. For the Delta, look at:
