If you read "Stockhausen on Stockhausen" and listen to some of his earlier
work, he was also using statistical analysis of sounds and waveforms (from
linguistic studies) and applied it to instrumental compositions.  Very
interesting stuff.  Like taking a digitized waveform of 1 second,
stretching it out and making it last 30 minutes, and applying the
different frequencies present in the sound to different
instruments.  Nifty.

Seems to me this kind of work by Stockhausen, Xenakis and others was
fundamental to the development of sampling and other synthesis techniques.
