something markus popp said
this folk just sent me this message privately 3 times, replying to 3
different messages i posted to the list, with no other explanation. i
suppose it's just his way to ask me to forward it to the list with
appropriate commentary. :)
it's interesting because popp sort of contradicts himself towards the
end of the article, & to add some fuel to that fire, the live set i've
seen from him last year (with david kristian & mitchell akiyama opening)
was indeed some very typical improv, particularly bland if compared to
the laptop magic of pita or morceaux_de_machines, for instance. in a
sense it was interesting because it was noisy & you wouldn't expect that
from oval, but... you had to wonder whether the noise was serious or
just a pisstake for people expecting to hear systemisch or ovalprocess
(like rdj & his "sandpaper" record).
his studio work may be another story (though nothing i've heard from
oval has ever appealed much to me) but "taking a year to achieve" is no
guarantee for a good recording anymore than say "letting it go
spontaneously". but we've been over that haven't we?
on the other hand, here are 3 things i have personally stolen from OVAL:
1) generic 4-letter word used as artist name...
OVAL -> CAMP
2) systematically prefixing album titles with the artist name...
_ovalprocess_ -> _camp féministe_
3) sampling famous avant-garde ambient records...
_selected ambient works vol.2_ -> _makesnd cassette_
i don't do CD skipping though, disc & the discmen do it better!
