Re: [microsound] speakers
some good advice on nearfied speakers anyone...
i'm currently using my hifi's for monitoring _cabasse jersey 221_ but i'm
looking for a decent set of flat_responce_monitors..
any suggestions ?
as far as near field studio monitors go, tannoy are great - the 800
or 800a's are excellent. they are very transparent, extremely flat
and they don't fatigue your ears. around $750 for a pair of the 800's
(i think). tannoy also has a bunch of other more affordable monitors,
as low as $360 for a pair.
also excellent are mackie's self powered monitors - HR824 THX. these
are great, but a little more pricey - about $1350 for the pair.
all in all, IMO, self powered monitors are your best bet - the amp is
totally matched for the speakers, and they usually sound better then
the unpowered version with your own amp.
i'd be hrad pressed to decide between the self-powered mackies and
the tannoy's (with a good amp).
you really need to hear them for yourself to decide which speakers
are right for you, and the room you put them in can dramatically
change the way they sound. so grab a few of your favorite cd's (ones
you've mixed and some ones you admire for their sound) and go down to
your local pro audio shop and bother the sales guy for a while.
i've heard that genelec makes a damn fresh monitor too, but i haven't
used them extensively so i can't comment on them. it also depends on
what you consider to be 'affordable'. to some it's $300, to others
its $1500. what ever you do, don't get any of event's line of studio
monitors. there is a lot of woofer noise when you put 20 - 60 hz
frequencies through them - you can actually hear the woofer moving,
quite annoying. up side of the 20/20's is that they are about $300
for the pair. in the end you get what you pay for with speakers.
ok, time to have some coffee and stop babbling.
my $.02 just ran out.
