[microsound] re: Transmissions Festival in Chicago

well, i promised a review and here it is...

I got there a bit late just as Sutekh was winding down his set. i really liked what i heard of it - it seemed a bit dubby and moodier than the recorded stuff I've heard. Kit Clayton came on next, and did a really nice MAX/MSP set - almost beatless, very granular and noisy. Very cool. Tojiko Noriko followed, and did a really interesting set that featured what seemed like (thought I couldn't see her too well) live sampling (using field recordings) and vocals. She came off as very shy and Bjork-like! Hecker was next. He did one long moody piece that slowly morphed and changed. I was sitting in front of a speaker, and was happy that his set drowned out the 4/4 techno that was bleeding in from the club downstairs. Another very nice set. Dettinger followed with a straight ahead 4/4 set (and the only non-Powerbook set of the night). I personally didn't care much for it - it's just not my thing. Lastly, Monolake came on. Really good set - played stuff off the last record. We weren't able to stay for all of it since I still had to drive 1.5 hours to get home, but really liked his set as well.

I don't know many people who could afford to go to many of the shows.
Ticket prices were truly ridiculous. Shame on both the promoters and the
artists. You'd think with big money sponsors like 'The WIRE' and 'C74'
things would be alittle better ;)

It was $28 per ticket for this show only. But for 6 artists that I respect, I really didn't have a problem with it. I heard Richard Chartier's and Pita's sets from the night before were really good too. I thought the organizers did a really good job, especially considering they had to deal with the noise and people traffic from the other club below.
