Re: [microsound] linux distribution for audi()

Guenter Geiger and bunch of other people are working on a distribution based
on Debian called DeMudi (Debian Multimedia Distribution) - I think that's
the name... It's supposed to be a distro for sound and multimedia artists
so they don't have to spend weeks configuring stuff but just getting their
work done. It's not available yet, AFAIK...

Otherwise any distribution will do and different distributions have
different issues but with some tweaking anything will run on any of the
distributions.

User-friendliness has still a long way to go in Linux. In fact, if you want
to use audio, in real time, it will be advisable to use the simples window
manager possible, which usually are not as friendly as Windoze or MacOS.
The desktops envoronments/window managers that are somewhat friendly consume
too many resources. The most user-friendly enviro I've seen was probably
Corel but I could see it only in the office. Not sound.

Probably the easiest to install and configure (initially) is RedHat.
Debian is TRULY free - non commercial.

PD performs great on linux. As long as you don't use your mouse for
tweaking while the audio is on. Otherwise you hear pops and stuff.... but
that's glitch, no?

Allow yourself a couple of months to learn the system to the extend that you
can compile/install/configure stuff (especially audio/multimedia) with
minimal help from people
