Zan Hoffman & Jeff Surak
Loisville's Zan Hoffman is a legend of the casssette culture, a network of
artists who, since the 80's have exchanged works in trade. Zan was born
1964 in Palo Alto. In 1984 a friend gave Zan a copy of "Op" magazine
because it's independent stance of small-label recordings was too obscure
for him. In this publication Zan discovered reviews of home-recorded
cassette releases. These three things stirred a creative awakening and
after that nothing in sight was safe from being turned into sound, recorded
for future collages and cut-ups. This in turn was pulled together with
intent of making a release available for trade by post.
That year marked the founding of the 'Zanstonean International
Distribution Service's Independent Cassette Kvmp9ni' (which was later
shortened to 'zidsic') to send out original releases in trade. In 1993 Zan
and Francisco Lopez undertook the collaborative "Zan Francisco Concert For
300 Magnetic Tapes" tour of Spain. To date Zan has released over 350 hours
of material at zidsic. This will be Zan's first performance in Chicago.

TV Pow
Todd Carter, Brent Gutzeit, Michael Hartman: acoustic and electronic
instruments. TV Pow is a trio of free improvisers first organized in Tokyo
1995 by Michael Hartman and Brent Gutzeit, and later joined by Todd Carter
in the move to Chicago in 1996. They employ samplers, percussion, invented
instruments, synthesizers, turntables, tape manipulation, computers and
multi-speaker surround-sound systems in a constantly evolving soundscape of
sparkling electronics, ambient drones, minimalist techno, and cinematic
field recordings. Creating through live performance something both new and
recombinant, TV Pow has toured throughout Japan, Europe, and the United States.

alluvion
since the mid-ninties, alluvion's work has fused high and low technology to
explore the sounds hidden in the everyday objects. the laptop computer
receives input from various sources - everything from disembodied
transistor radios and electromagnetic interference created by appliances,
to small bits of found cassette dragged across tape heads and email
converted into audio files. physical sources are modified in a manner that
is as much a part of the creative process as the recording/mixing/editing.
radios and keyboards are torn apart prior to their use. data files are
scrambled and randomized, vinyl records are treated with glue, carved with
razors, coated with spraypaint, left outdoors to endure the elements. the
supposed randomness of this inaudible portion of the compositional process
is what gives life to the sounds hidden in everyday objects, and form the
basis of alluvion's digital exploration.
