Cuisine was probably his high point, I found Gigapus to be a slight
disappointment although it has its moments. Cuisine is a direct descendent
of Bad Mood Guy, both of those albums are 'poppy' at least if you compare
them to 'Gashing the old Mae West'. In fact, even in his early
'experimental' days, he made the most 'poppy' Severed Heads recordings, such
as 'Goodbye Tonsils', which is probably more 'poppy' than anything up until
'Heart of the Party'. Anyway Cuisine was a step back from the poppiness of
Rotund for Success, Nettwerk wouldnt even release Cuisine until he made it
'more poppy', but you can tell that Gigapus is a return to the Rotund era,
as 'Heart of the Party' sounds a whole lot like 'Big Car'.
Anyway, to say you liked Severed Heads before they were 'poppy' is another
way of saying you never liked Severed Heads because Severed Heads IS poppy.
That is, unless you're a Clifford and you want to get your hands on that
extended Gashing the Old Mae West loop so you can listen to it for 40
minutes and feel artistically gratified by its obtuseness. It was designed
just for Cliffords like you, after all!
