Re: [microsound] Stockhausen (was: Severed Heads)

I dont know if this is relatively recent for you, this is about stockausen
in concert:

Well i have seen him in concert 5 times in the last 2 years. The first three
concerts took place 2 years ago (three days in a row) in the context of a
contemporary music festival in Madrid's national auditorium (thats in Spain
where i live). These concerts were an UNFORGETTABLE experience. With him
were Marcus (his son) playing the trumpet and ocassionaly the piano and two
ladies (his wife and somebody else , dont remember what they played, wind
instruments though) while he sat in the middle of the auditorium controlling
the mixing desk (all of the instruments were micked) and tape. All three
days were incredible, both the music and the hiper-virtuosistic
interpretations (that is, technically and musically) from the instrument
performers. I dont remember the program though they played several
instrumental transcriptions from the 'light opera cycle'. Not much tape
parts though. I say this because now comes second part...

The second two concerts i attended last year (the same festival one year
later) were really dissaponting. In first place, he came alone: no marcus,
no ladies, just tape, uh CD i should say. Stockhausen did some knob
twisting (spacialization effects). And the tape compositions were lousy (of
course its my opinion). They were opposite to the year before, cold & rigid
(does this word exist in english?).
I think he played several known tape compostions made at different stages
in stockhausen's career. I vaguely remember two pieces, one made up with
fragments of national anthems, the other something of the... jung (the song
of the young?), etc...
Well, my conclusion was that im absolutely crazy about stockhausen's
instrumental compositions (and about the way the family of stockhausen
plays) but cant stand his solo tape works. Dond take me bad, i like many
solo tape music (i like to make some tape experiments myself), but not what
i heard manufactured by Stockhausen.

By the way, could Sonar have been the festival you heard about? Its an
electronic music festival that takes place yearly in Barcelona (in Spain
too). Stockhausen 'played' at the Sonar last year (few days after my
disgraceful experience). I think he played the 'song of the young'(?) (could
it be an 8 track composition? i dont remember very well). I heard good
things about this concert from some people. Not from me though.

Greg. (please forgive my english)
