[microsound] Re: installation people

I did a sound art piece with 3 colleagues this past spring that involved 5 portable cd players into a mixer. The cd players were turned on and set on repeat each day by the gallery staff, and lasted just fine (the installation ran for about a month). We used an 8 channel Behringer mixer, which you can get for about $129 US, and that held up really well too. No problems at all.

Our piece was meant as a generative looped work, so synchronizing the cd players was not an issue. I would imagine you could achieve the same with portable minidisc players, but they are more expensive. We found our cd players for around $30 ea, and we left a couple extra in case any fried out. Luckily, they all lasted. Good luck.

I know this is a tech question, but...
are there any art installation people out there who've set up multiple
(8 or more) channel sound works on a budget? I'm wondering about synchronising
cheap CD players versus multiple ADATs and the whole amplification
issue...
Any suggestions/resources would be lovely.

don't expect portable cd players to be in sync, especially cheap ones.
decks are more useful in such arenas,
but cheapest (quality, as well as, cash) would be to put the sound on tape, splitting the tracks for
multiple channels.
