Well, what is sound?

You could hear somethin IF 

your eardrum would be touching the sound source, therefore, it
would be sound.

If not, then ther is no medium, there is no sound (definition).

Sound=waves within medium.
no medium, no waves.
(the wavelength is important too, I think)
If I remeber correctly sound consists of transversal waves,
low and high pressure with a certain distance...

It's a matter of interpretation, there is no "real" answer, I guess.

Is that what you wanted to "hear"?

I have been reading this text from the 6th century (!) in which the sound of
planets is already mentioned....

So tell me if I'm wrong in stating that if there's a SOURCE for a sound the
sound exists, whether it is being transmitted through some MEDIUM or not.
