critical

Now hang on just a second... there is certainly a difference between panning people's CDs in public and having intelligent, constructive discussion. We can use this public forum to discuss each others' work critically, go deeper than simple value judgements. For example: Several folks on this list try "conceptual" albums... do the concepts work? Are they intelligible, unique, or necessary? If some element is missing that might have made a work stronger, it's relevant for discussion. Another example: If an album is redundant or simply "genre", perhaps the artist isn't aware and would benefit from talking about it. I think that that's different from mutual ass-kissing. Conversely, if an artist tries someting very different from his or her previous work, and it works, it might be interesting to discuss the change in method or goal. Criticism makes the work stronger, and takes it beyond mere praise or dismissal.
