anyone that calls themselves, or believes tehy are, a promoter,
should do a better job than getting 35 >people to pay at the door.
there is nothing wrong with getting paid scale if you are a
musician. if youre a >hobbiest, than a beer on the house may be
fine. a real promoter, not a dabbler, should recognize the >worth of
an artiost or performer, and not expect them to sleep on the floor,
go hungry, work for chips >and warm beer or stale water.
i do and do not agree with these sentiments...firstly it really does
depend on how much is being asked and in what context. it is really
hard putting on gigs in australia as producers have to fly 18-25
hours just to get here....then stay on a floor or in a bed and
breakfast...then play to 100 odd people if they are lucky....again
depending on who they are.... i have recently had kim cascone and
francisco lopez and their requests were more than ok -
completely fine.
while i have heard of some crazy fees being asked .... it
would have cost $7000(us) to put on a show of ikeda's ($2500 artists
fee plus tech requirements), vlad delay asked for $1500 (us) per
show, farben asked for $1100 (us). needless to say these three did
not come as there is simply no way to pull this sort of cash without
HUGE promo and they are simply not big enough to risk so much money.
i guess i am saying each and every case needs to be seen as separate.
it is their life - their day job etc and they do need to get
enough...but at the same time it is easy to ask for way too much and
get nothing.
kim and francisco were well looked after. i spent heaps of time
showing francisco the city and oren helped us spent heaps of our
money on the best food. i bet that wouldn't happen with a big time
promoter...if i had $7000 resting on a gig i would not be taking
time to chat, nor sleep...and i would rather spread the cash around,
if it was there...
