immedia/francisco lopez live review

immedia/francisco lopez live @ extrasensory, london
review

i attend the extrasensory event last night, oct.12th
in london. the live acts performing were immedia and
francisco lopez.

8pm
immedia played first, creating a almost silent
atmosphere of near inaudible frequencies. clicks and
pops would pan in and out, of electric fields, this
composition slowly moved for about 30 mins. the subtle
nature of this performance and the clarity and
precision of the sound made this one of the most
powerful pieces iv seen live. as a composer i was left
stunned at the definition of the sounds. my only
complaint with this performance was the movement in
the room by the attendance.

10pm
francisco lopez played next and in classic lopez
style, we were all facing away from the black material
that was hung around his performance space,
blindfolded and in complete darkness, the pa was a
quad setup that had enough power to do francisco's
sound justice. the was francisco's first performance
in the UK and there was a large crowd for his set.
the build was slow, textural scapes building to a
decent volume, the sound was VERY thick. shifting in
and out and behind, his real time use of a eq as an
instrument gives him the ability to take one sound and
work every frequency, creating movement in a single
sound source. Lopez made great use of the sound system
with his placement of sounds, at times i wasnt sure if
the audio i was hearing was in the back of the room or
outside and then at times the volume made every one in
the room nervous. the end of the composition was a
very slow build that end in a volume i didnt know was
possible in such a small area, and then it got louder.
and then is was gone. everyone set in silence until
the lights come on some time later. breath taking. it
was very inspirational to see these two artists
perform together, working with similar concepts but
completely different sounds
if you every have a chance to see either of these
artists do.

the entire event was good, personally enjoyed the
tube/light installation the best as far as the other
activities go.
