Micronauts,

Been lurking around here for about a week, so I thought I might introduce myself to this virtual community and ask a question.

I'm an American sound artist living in Holland. My most recent project, in cooperation with the RIXC new media center in Riga, involved bringing about 25 different sound and media artists to a Soviet era 32 meter radio telescope in the forest of Latvia for three days of sonic experimentation and cross-cultural networking.

For the past couple of years I have worked a lot with 'found material' from the radio, whether it is voices, snips of music or just tones and bursts of static, and this interest has extended to physical resonances of many kinds. I've recently gotten very interested in doing soundtrack work, particularly for experimental and 'found footage' films and videos, most recently a short score for a video document of the radiotelescope adventure entitled "Latvian Waves", by Sara Kolster. Technically, I tend to work mostly in Audio Mulch for the PC, although just about every other app I can find has lived on the harddisk at one time or another. I'm also making a stab at PD (a MAX/MSP clone for the PC).

One of my big issues with MAX/MSP type programs, however, is their potential insularity. I know that they are the most dynamic and flexible applications for sound and video, but many of the people I see working in MAX become obsessed with the patches themselves. What comes out are tiny little self referential worlds of control data and feedback loops. For me, sound art and music should have a bit more relation to the world around us than that. Using the 'found sounds' from the radiotelescope, as well as the scientific astronomical data we gathered as control data, reminded me that even the most abstract sound constructions can still be anchored in some common frame of reference that makes it accessable for more than the musician/programmer.

....so, after that little bit of conceptualization, my real question is a bit more mundane....

Is there an archive of posts maintained anywhere for this list? I have gotten lists of threads back from the robot running the list, but can't seem to get ahold of the actual posts, some of which look pretty interesting.

Looking forward to more discussions,
Derek
