There's the VX pocket, which interfaces via PCMIA slot.
There are other options via Firewire:  MOTU 828, Metric-Halo etc.
Some via USB: Tascam, Roland etc...

They all are additional to the computer.
I don't think consumers are really into
needing SPDIF, until they are all demanding
to be able to decode AC-3 streams from
their Powerbook DVD players.
