the "white" in white noise is a comparison to white light, which is made up
of all of the frequencies - colors - of light combined at equal power. this
is directly analogous to white noise - which is essentially all audible
tones sounded simultaneously.
if you separate white light into its components, you would have colored
light. if you separate white noise into it's components, you'd have
individual sine waves, or pitches.
