My attitude has always been that absolutely NO music is worth damaging my
hearing. Messages become pretty insignificant to me at that point. I
suppose there could be some kind of masochistic message about destroying
the thing which actually allows you to enjoy something you hold dear, but
that's not something I'm personally interested in.

Apropos to this, there's a piece on John Zorn's "Kristallnacht" disc which
mostly consists of loud recordings of glass breaking which actually comes
with a warning saying it might cause hearing damage if played at high
volumes.

And also, I live in Boston and it's always amazed me how incredibly high
the noise level gets inside the subway trains here. Loud enough to
interfere with my discman at full volume (using headphones). It's
absolute noise pollution, but I guess the people in charge of such things
prefer to overlook this instance. Probably cause it would be very
expensive to fix the problem.
