RE: [microsound] Re: grabbing people with a statement

Sound and language do have many meanings when we look at things at a conventional level. Life is full of meanings. All of which we have to ascribe. Does anything actually have any of these meanings if there were none of us to ascribe it so? We can say images and sounds have meanings once we give them one. Most processes of creation ascribe meaning as a basic element of the process. Languages develope only after a group can agree on a common meaning to ascribe. My (and I only assume my own and not anything about anyone else's) interest lies in finding processes that dont ascribe meaning, therefore allowing sound-image-language to be freely interpreted without any of my own psychology or sentiments pushing sound-image-language around( a possible task?? I think so, but by no means easy). The viewer/audience(including myself since I will be in the same position as they are) will be free to ascribe as they please. Each individual will have their own unique meaning they ascribe to the "work"(if they choose to do so). I have no qualms with individuals or processes that do ascribe meaning to sound-image-language. It is quite a natural and produces some incredible things. I just feel sometimes certain individuals really push things too far and misplace the ultimate with the convetional.

At an ultimate level the sound of my kithen sink turned on is just that. I can then compose it into something where I can ascribe some kind of meaning at the conventional level but it ultimately is just a kitchen sink turned on. I would like to be able to appreciate it as just. I would also like to become a good enough listener/viewer/experiencer to appreciate things for what they are as well as what someone else may have imposed on them. In no way am I trying to claim that those that use/believe/enjoy meaning in sound-image-language are invalid in doing so. If I did I would be a hypocrite. I do the same in everyday life by speaking and enjoying most music. I just wonder what it would be like to sometimes not do so.

thanks
brian
