RE: [microsound] Re: lowercase why?
i think subscibing to somthing like the microsound list and then getting
upsent when you get press-releases for asundry experimental shows is a bit
like watching network TV and complaining about the commercials.
although telling students at mills collage to listen does sound a bit silly
i think many press releases are designed for distribution over a
(relatively) wide range of people with different backgrounds. certainly
explaining that your sounds are quiet or subtle on the "lowercase-sound"
list is redundant, but the city's local weekly enternainment newspaper
readers would require it and maybe even a few come to the show. i think it
would be a shame if "we," those who play shows and produce events, stopped
trying to reach out to people who are not already familiar with the artists,
techniques, aesthetics, etc.
the phonography group had a field day with "egoless sound" last week...when
i used the term for my part of the press release i intended it to describe
sounds that SEEMED to exist as of their own accord but of course there was a
lot of thinking and therefore ego behind them.
the "lowercase-sound" term wasn't intened to be pretentious either. just
simply as a poetic way to describe a specific artist's personal work. it's
just that the term struck a nerve with people and thus a community has
grown around the term. it was an organic process, not the result of some
marketing agency.
