Well I think what matters is your actions. You can maybe agree with some
philosophy in an intellectual sense, but if you're not putting those
beliefs into practice does it make a difference ?
Like for example, can someone be considered a racist if that person has
certain beliefs, but doesn't actively discriminate against other races ?

Of course! I find it frightening that you would even ask that. How could a person's intellectual philosophy not influence all of their actions and decisions in life? Cage being a relevant positive example here.


I think lots of people define themselves by theoretical beliefs which they
find out don't hold up when put to the test in the "real" world.

I find that my "theoretical beliefs" are immensely useful in the "real" world despite the hostility of those who dismiss such ideas as idealistic fantasies. In fact testing these theories out in the "real" world helps me uncover and avoid people who seem quite friendly but are in fact closet racists or fascists.
