re: Ars Electronica
its interesting the direction the award has taken. from the takeover
of digital musics from computer music in 1999 >> which was done as
it was perceived that academic computer was incredibly boring and was
not keeping up with contemporary developments in new music. the
computer music section was said to be an award for academics given to
them by their peers (read friends as this is a small subculture). a
pat on the back for all those computer musicians who were not being
recognised.
now we have the digital music section and we see the same thing
developing already. take a look at who is on the jury this year. i
have nothing at all against them and only know one of them personally
but it is a little left field.... bLectum from bLechdom, Tony
Herrington, Naut Humon, Florian Hecker, Chris Watson.
tony herrington and naut humon seem to be the wild cards....sort of.
also there is a clause which i think may be new that states that the
jury can nominate artists who have not entered (ie nominate their
friends who didn't get it together to write an application) .
madness all around.
is this the end what looked like a great chance for new
electronic music to be rightly recognised. is the award now just
friends awarding their friends awards??
..kk
